London has its Highgate and Paris its Père Lachaise, but Kerepesi Cemetery in Budapest is about the size of those two cemeteries combined.

Lajos Kossuth, Ferenc Deák, Lajos Batthyány and many other national heroes are buried here, making this 56-hectare necropolis the Hungarian National Pantheon. It is also the resting place of many of our poets, writers, and artists, the gravestones of whom are wonderful pieces of art.

There are two very unique parts of the cemetery. The Labour Movement Pantheon was established in 1958 to honour those who had lived for Communism and the People, as the inscription of the central monument says. Paradoxically, the memorial of the heroes and unknown victims of the 1956 Revolution is found next to it.
