hungarian holocaust memorial walk

OVERVIEW

In Hungary still no day passes without a reference to the Holocaust in the media. The senseless and brutal extermination of almost half a million Hungarian citizens during the Second World War is one of the greatest traumas the nation went through. On our memorial walk we will highlight the historical process that led to the Holocaust, the struggle for survival during the last days of the War and the fight of the Jewish community and progressive Hungarian public against falsification of history so that such a genocide could not be repeated.

Itinerary:

We’ll start our walk in the Jewish Quarter where you’ll be acquainted with the history of the Main Ghetto in the ghetto after the German occupation of 1944-45. We’ll see the The Wall Monument, an interactive piece of art in Dohány Street the plaque commemorating the liberation of the ghetto by the Red Army and you’ll understand why the arrival of the Russians is considered as a liberation by those who survived the deportations while it was occupation for the rest of the country.
We’ll also see one of the most beautiful memorials, the Emanual Tree, a weeping willow memorial, where the names of 30,000 Holocaust victims have been inscribed in the tree’s metal leaves.
Next, we’ll visit the Carl Lutz Memorial, the symbolism of which will leave a vivid memory in you. This is a most approriate way to pay homage to the Swiss Vice-Consul who saved more than 60.000 lives by issuing protection letters.
We continue our walk along Rumbach Sebestyén Street passing stumbling blocks (Stolpersteine), the work of German artist Günter Demnig to keep the memory of the victims alive, and then see the newly renovated Synagogue where there is a plaque commemorating the first victims of the Holocaust back in 1941 when people without proper residence papers were deported to the German occupied Ukrainian city of Kamianets-Podilskyi where the first massacre of the Jews took place
After leaving the Jewish Quarter, we’ll proceed to Szabadság tér to witness the present-day political controversies of falsified historical remembrance by looking at the locally named Living or Counter Monument inspired by government initiated German Occupation Monument with a purpose to push the responsibility away from the Hungarian ruling elite of the times.
Our next destination is the most moving Holocaust memorial, the Shoes on the Danube Bank, commemorating the Budapest Jews killed here by the Hungarian fascist mob during the last days of the siege of the city.
Our last stop is the Holocaust Memorial Centre in Páva utca, District 9 where we can observe the Memorial Wall, the Synagogue and visit one of the most excellent Holocaust Museums.
