Our tour provides an exclusive guided walking excursion with detailed insight for those who want to get a comprehensive picture of the roles of the Jews in 19th-century Hungary, and to identify causes of 20th-century anti-Semitism culminating in the Holocaust.

While walking through Budapest’s historic and lively Jewish Quarter, an expert historian will brief you on the very complex subject of the Hungarian Jewish identity, and highlight how and why Jews integrated into Hungarian society over many centuries, while explaining attitudes of the Hungarian majority toward the Jewish population over time.
Participants learn about the role of the Jewish community in forming Pest into a prosperous city in the 19th century, and why the anti-Semitic mayor of Vienna coined the derogatory phrase “Judapest”.
During the walk in the Jewish Quarter, you will learn more about Jewish lifestyle and customs and also what life was like in the ghetto after the German occupation of 1944-45. You will also understand why the arrival of the Red Army in 1945 is considered as a liberation, and not an occupation, by those who survived the deportations.
The tour will end with ‘Flodni’ tasting at the Fröchlich Confectioner’s, where we wrap up all the information and you will have an opportunity to ask about anything you are interested in.
