ECO GREEN TOUR Of BUDAPEST

OVERVIEW

According to Fungarian’s random survey among Hungarian youth (aged 16 – 36), we found that eco-consciousness is very high in this age group. Budapest is not yet at the top, but the new city management elected in 2019 has the ambition to make Budapest green.

From our survey, we also learned that when eco-conscious people travel, they focus on learning about local history and lifestyle, connecting with people, and consuming moderately while enjoying themselves.

What we offer on our tour is a fun time while having a dialogue on sharing experiences on green issues. We want to show you what we are proud of and, at the same time, to invite you to share your best practices.

Before sustainability became a buzz word for eco-consciousness, Fungarian had met all the criteria to deserve the title:
we do only private small-group walking tours and sometimes use public transport
we advise the visitors to buy local and, by teaching some essential Hungarian, we offer an ice-breaker to win the confidence of the locals
our focus is on learning from each other, sharing experiences
most of our themed tours are educational, let it be on history, architecture or lifestyle
Because of this, we planned the following itinerary for our eco-green tour.

We’ll meet at the AURÓRA community centre in District 8, where you can get an insight into how alternative youth culture organizes themselves. The place opens at noon, so if you wish to start the tour earlier, we’ll change our planned route and go to AURÓRA later.

After having a coffee here, we’ll discover some alternative places in this multicultural district like FERI, a Feminist gallery, and several small vintage shops and spend some time at the Rákóczi tér Market Hall where you can see the whole range of raw materials Hungarians use daily, including products by vendors from the countryside selling their own produce.

If you are interested in more vegetarian or vegan products, we’ll visit the popular SZATYORBOLT, an organic grocery store nearby, and have an exchange of ideas about the specialty of the products.

From here, we will walk over to the Jewish Quarter, the home of several green initiatives, but by now an endangered zone caused by over-tourism, especially stag party crowds. However, the new district management has great plans to make the so-called party district sustainable again. We will acquaint you with several civil initiatives, including the activity of the BIKE MAFFIA (young people on bikes who cook weekly and distribute food to the homeless) and maybe the Sunday Farmer’s Market at Szimplakert.

We will wrap up our tour by introducing you to the best of Hungarian Jewish traditions and have a flódni (a Jewish delicacy with poppy-seed, walnut, and apple) at Rachel’s Confectionery, a tiny place which gained enormous popularity among the locals, thanks to its originality.
