THE BEM FLAG OF HUNGARIAN FREEDOM

Hungarian history could be well related by the history of flags starting from the Árpáds until the flag with a hole of 1956. The present red-white-green flag dates back to 1848/49 War of Independence against Austria but these colours were banned until the Compromise of 1867 when finally it became the official flag Hungary.

One of the many paradoxes about Hungary is the form of state. Now it’s a republic but the official coat of arms of the country displayed all over the city and on the Hungarian passport is the one with the Holy Crown which might suggest to outsiders that we are still a kingdom. However, the one without the crown, popularly called Kossuth coat-of arms became the symbol of the short-lived first republic of 1849 and was also popular during the 1956 Revolution.
