Hungarian easter

Unlike in usual times, in this virus-stricken year, Easter is mainly about eating. Eating a lot!

Traditional Hungarian Easter food includes: smoked ham, hard boiled eggs and most importantly, Easter kalács (sweet bread baked in a braided form).

A unique Easter custom known only in the Eastern part of Hungary (mainly in Hajdú and Szabolcs countries and in Carpathian Ukraine among the Greek Orthodox community) is the ‘pászkaszentelés’ i.e. blessing Easter food with holy water. This always happens on Easter Monday after the mass when families bring some of their own Easter food in a woven basket for the priest to sprinkle it with holy water. In addition to the ham, eggs and kalács , there are two special items: stuffed lamb (stuffing made from boiled eggs with parsley) and most importantly, an Easter delicacy called sárgatúró (curd cheese pudding).
